Com a invenção de George Eastman, em 1888, da máquina fotográfica Kodak e filme em rolos ocorreu a revolução da indústria fotográfica inteira! Com a popularização da fotografia os álbuns de recorte também cresceram em registros e conteúdo, estavam cada vez mais voltados ao registro fotográfico. Também nesta época existia uma tendência para enfocar o estudo da genealogia reforçando a necessidade de criação de álbuns de recorte para gravação das histórias pessoais e familiares.
O scrapbooking começou a perder sua popularidade no início de 1900, devido às restrições econômicas que se seguiram à Primeira Guerra Mundial. A recessão que se seguiu, forçou muitas empresas relacionadas ao scrapbook sair fora dos negócios. Mas foi nesta época que Mark Twain inventou um bloco de rascunho autocolante. Ele era um scrapbooker tão ávido que reservou seus domingos para seu passatempo favorito. Ele patenteou a sua invenção e por volta de 1901 podiam ser encontrados 57 tipos diferentes de álbuns Mark Twain, mas muitas pessoas preferiam fazer os seus próprios álbuns.
