Scrapbooking (scrap = refugos, sobras, recortes - book = livro) significa a arte de criar álbuns da memória com o uso de fotos, papéis decorativos, etiquetas, entre outros itens.
Sua história remonta há séculos e surgiu com a idéia de colecionar restos de papéis coloridos, de embalagens, cartões onde tudo era colocado em um álbum.
Os registros que encontramos dão conta que há álbuns de recorte desde o século dezessete. Anos atrás as pessoas já colecionavam seus recortes que possuíam significado e preservavam em álbuns. Mas a data exata que o scrapbooking surgiu não é definida.
Na história de scrapbooking, Thomas Jefferson estava entre o primeiro americano mais famoso a fazer álbuns de recortes. Ele criava uma série de álbuns com recortes de jornal que falavam sobre seu mandato para referência futura.
